History of Bárcena Mayor

In the Middle Ages, the valley of Cabuérniga, then called Kaornega, was resettled around small monasteries that held authority over the land and its people. The local church of Santa Águeda belonged to the monastery of Santa María de Yermo before Alfonso VIII transferred it to the monastery of Cardeña in 1168. Over time, monastic holdings passed to feudal lords, and Bárcena Mayor eventually came under the control of the House of Vega and later the Dukes of Infantado.

Some claim it is the oldest village in Cantabria, though others dispute this firmly.

Heritage & Monuments

Bárcena Mayor is a coherent, well-preserved example of traditional Cantabrian mountain architecture, which earned it designation as a historic-artistic site in 1979. In the 1990s the village was adapted for tourism, the road in was improved, a car park was built on the outskirts, and the old centre was made pedestrian-only. It has been listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain since 2015 and is a member of that official association.

Why Bárcena Mayor is considered one of Spain's Most Beautiful Villages

Bárcena Mayor is the only village inside the Saja-Besaya natural park, set on a small river meadow at the foot of the mountains of the Cantabrian watershed. It is a tight, compact cluster of stone houses, its edge marked by the backs of the house rows, and it has been protected as a historic-artistic site since 1979. The old centre is closed to cars.

The typical house is the casa montañesa, its side walls pushed out on S-shaped corbels to shelter the solana, a sunny balcony introduced in the seventeenth century for drying maize. La Calleja and Calle Larga run between seventeenth- and eighteenth-century houses with arcades and wooden balconies. The church of Santa María holds five altarpieces, the Casa Rectoral has a sundial, and a covered wash house stands in the Plaza de las Ovejas. Several walking routes start here, including the GR-71.

Bárcena Mayor joined Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España in 2015. The label is awarded by a private association, not the state: a village applies and is audited against around 40 criteria, from how its historic buildings are conserved to the upkeep of its streets, and members are reviewed and can lose it. Bárcena Mayor is one of 7 members in Cantabria, out of 126 in Spain. See all heritage towns in Cantabria.

Practical Travel Info

The only way to reach Bárcena Mayor is by road from the A8 motorway. The car park sits outside the village, and visitors walk a short stretch of paved path to reach the centre. Cars are banned inside: a local conservation law protects the old paving and narrow streets from vehicle damage.

The village is not well suited to people with mobility difficulties or wheelchair users, as the ground is uneven, ancient, and sloped. Inside, there are numerous small craft shops and one shop selling regional food products.
