History of Vélez-Blanco
The site of Vélez-Blanco was settled in the prehistoric period; the nearby Cueva de los Letreros contains Neolithic cave paintings including the famous Indalo figure that has become a symbol of Almería. The town itself developed under Moorish rule. After the Reconquista, the area came under the control of the Fajardo family, who were granted the Marquisate of Los Vélez.
Don Pedro Fajardo, the first Marquis, built the Renaissance castle between 1506 and 1515, importing Italian craftsmen to execute the famous marble patio — an example of the Italian Renaissance style arriving in Spain before most of Castile had seen it. In 1904, the entire marble courtyard of the castle was removed and sold to the American collector George Blumenthal, who eventually donated it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it remains. The castle shell stands intact on its crag, stripped of its contents.
Heritage & Monuments
The Castle of Vélez-Blanco (Castillo de los Fajardo), even without its patio, is a powerful late-medieval-Renaissance structure on an impressive natural rock. The exterior is well preserved and the views from the castle over the Los Vélez valley are exceptional. Inside, the empty marble frames where the patio columns once stood create a haunting atmosphere.
A replica of the patio has been installed in the Vélez-Blanco municipal museum. The Cave of Los Letreros, a prehistoric site with rock art including the famous Indalo figure, is 3 km from the town and can be visited on guided tours. The village below is compact and whitewashed, with the 16th-century Church of Santiago beside the castle.
Practical Travel Info
Vélez-Blanco is 130 km northeast of Almería and 105 km from Lorca (Murcia) on the A-317. A car is essential; public transport connections are minimal. The castle can be visited daily; guided tours run on weekend mornings.
The Cueva de los Letreros requires advance booking through the Almería provincial government. A full day combining castle, museum, and cave is ideal.
