Pampaneira

When the Kingdom of Granada fell to the Catholic Monarchs, many of its people retreated into the Alpujarras and held on for close to eighty years, keeping their customs, religion, and language. These were the Moriscos of Granada, and they endured in the steep mountain terrain until Don Juan of Austria, sent by King Philip II, brought the violent war against them to an end. The depopulation that followed was widespread, and the Alpujarras had to be resettled with people brought in from Castile and lower Andalucía.

The name Pampaneira, like other Alpujarran place names ending in "-eira", comes from Andalusi Romance or Mozarabic, and already existed before the Castilian conquest.

The town sits in the western part of the Granada Alpujarras, in the Poqueira ravine, at more than 1,000 metres above sea level on the lower slopes of Sierra Nevada. The rivers Poqueira and Trevélez run through its municipal area. Neighbouring towns include Bubión, Capileira, La Taha, Órgiva, and Lanjarón. The entire municipal territory falls within the Sierra Nevada national and natural park, and much of it forms part of the protected historic ensemble of the Barranco del Poqueira. The population stands at 312 inhabitants (INE 2025).

The altitude gives Pampaneira a continentalized Mediterranean climate: cold winters with snow and frost not unusual, and summers that are warm but moderated by proximity to the Mediterranean, with peak temperatures above 35°C but below 40°C. Rainfall is variable and can be heavy, with a dry summer period and cold-front storms in autumn.

In 2013 Pampaneira became one of the fourteen founding members of Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España, and the first town in Granada province to join the association.

Pampaneira is the lowest of the three Poqueira villages in the Alpujarra and the first most visitors reach, which is why its little Plaza de la Libertad is always busy with locals and walkers. It keeps the Berber look of the region: steep, irregular lanes paved like mountain paths, flat terraos for roofs, and tinaos, the covered porches built over the doorways of houses.

The parish church of the Santa Cruz, raised in the sixteenth century over a mosque, has a Mudéjar coffered ceiling that mixes Islamic craftsmanship with Renaissance design. Water is part of the village's character, from the Fuente de San Antonio beside the church to a signed walk that follows its channels and fountains through the lanes.

Pampaneira joined Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España in 2013. The label is awarded by a private association, not the state: a village applies and is audited against around 40 criteria, from how its historic buildings are conserved to the upkeep of its streets, and members are reviewed and can lose it.
