History of Almonaster la Real

The ridge of Almonaster has been occupied since Bronze Age times. The Romans established a settlement here, and the ruins of a Roman theatre survive below the mosque. Under Moorish rule a mosque was built on the Roman remains in the 10th century, using columns and capitals salvaged from the Roman structure.

After the Christian conquest in the 13th century the mosque was converted to Christian use, though its form was preserved. The small village that grew up around the mosque retained a quiet, agricultural character throughout the medieval and early modern periods. The area remained remote even by the standards of rural Andalucía, a factor that has contributed to the preservation of both the mosque and the character of the village.

Heritage & Monuments

The Mosque of Almonaster la Real is the primary reason to make the journey: built in the 10th century on a Roman podium, it is one of the best-preserved pre-Almohad mosques in Spain outside Córdoba. The prayer hall contains horseshoe arches resting on reused Roman columns; the mihrab is intact. The minaret, converted to a church tower in the Christian period, can be climbed for views over the sierra.

Below the mosque, excavated Roman theatre seating can be seen. The village bullfighting ring, built into a natural hollow in the hillside, is used for the annual romería (May festival). The surrounding sierra village landscape — stone walls, chestnut woods, small farms — is characteristic of the remoter parts of the Huelva sierras.
