History of Alcalá la Real

La Mota hill has been fortified since at least the Bronze Age. The Moors built a substantial alcazaba here, commanding the road between Córdoba and Granada. Alfonso XI of Castile captured it in 1341 after a long campaign, an event celebrated in the town's name — 'Alcalá' derives from the Arabic qal'a (castle), 'la Real' meaning it belonged to the crown.

The fortress-city on the hill grew to contain a cathedral, palaces, convents, and a full urban life. After the final Reconquista and the unification of the kingdom, the strategic importance of the hill site declined, and the population gradually moved down to the current lower town. The hilltop city was largely abandoned by the 19th century, leaving a ghost town of ruined churches and streets.

Heritage & Monuments

The Fortaleza de La Mota encompasses the ruins of the old city on the hill: the keep, walls, the ruined Gothic-Renaissance Abbatial Church of Santo Domingo (partly restored), a palace, cisterns, and the remains of streets and houses. The views from the ramparts encompass the olive-covered plains of Jaén and Granada with the Sierra Nevada visible in the distance. The site is now an archaeological park and one of the best open-air heritage sites in Andalucía.

In the lower town, the Palacio Abacial and the Church of Santo Domingo de Silos are notable. The Municipal Museum focuses on the history of the fortified city.
