History of Fregenal de la Sierra
Fregenal de la Sierra was a Moorish settlement taken by Ferdinand III in 1229 and subsequently granted to the Knights Templar, who built the castle that dominates the town. After the dissolution of the Templars, it passed to the Order of Santiago. The town developed as a frontier settlement and market centre for the Sierra Morena.
Its location on the border between Extremadura and Andalucía, near the passes through the Sierra, gave it strategic importance in the medieval period. The town's most unusual feature — the bullring inside the castle — was created in the early 19th century when the municipality converted the castle courtyard to a permanent bullring, a solution unique in Spain.
Heritage & Monuments
The Castle of Fregenal, a 13th-century Templar fortification with a square plan and corner towers, contains within its walls a complete functioning bullring (plaza de toros), erected in the 1830s. The combination is remarkable: medieval battlements look down on a sand ring with wooden seating. The castle-bullring complex can be visited daily.
The Church of Santa María, a large Gothic-Mudéjar structure, is the main religious monument. The old town has fine aristocratic houses and an 18th-century Plaza de España. The nearby Sierra Morena provides walking and scenic drives.
Practical Travel Info
