History of Garrovillas de Alconétar
Garrovillas takes the second part of its name from the Roman bridge of Alconétar, which crossed the Tagus river near the current site of the Alcántara reservoir and was one of the most important river crossings on the road from Mérida to Salamanca. The bridge was submerged when the reservoir was filled in 1969, though parts have been relocated. The town itself received a market charter in 1218 from Alfonso IX of León, making the Tuesday market one of the oldest documented markets in Extremadura.
The arcaded main square was built over the following centuries to shelter merchants and their goods — the porticoes are the physical expression of that commercial heritage. The town remained an important road junction and market centre throughout the medieval and early modern periods.
Heritage & Monuments
The Plaza Mayor is the essential sight: a large square entirely surrounded by granite-pillared arcades of two storeys, with the 16th-century Church of Santa María de la Consolación on one side and the former Consistory (town hall) on another. The granite construction is typical of Extremaduran civic architecture but the completeness of the arcaded perimeter is rare. The market is held on Tuesdays and functions as it has for eight centuries.
The 16th-century Church of Santa María contains a Mudéjar altar screen and some Renaissance reliefs. The Convent of San Francisco has a fine cloister. A section of the medieval town wall survives on the periphery of the old town.
