History of Tui
Tui's history runs deeper than its medieval stones suggest. Excavations during the construction of the Vigo–Tui motorway turned up Palaeolithic remains that were, at the time of their discovery, the oldest in Galicia. Stone tools survive on the river terraces of the Miño and Louro, a Neolithic axe was found at Carrasqueira, and megalithic monuments still stand at Areas. The Bronze Age left behind a bronze helmet and axes, now in the Diocesan Museum, along with rock carvings at Randufe.
By the Iron Age, hilltop fortified settlements — castros — ringed the area. Classical sources named Tui, then called Tude, as the capital of the Grovii people. Around Monte Aloya alone there are five castros, and on its summit runs nearly three kilometres of semi-buried walls — the longest in Galicia — whose purpose and date remain disputed. Scholars classify it as a military enclosure, but its perimeter includes three water sources, suggesting a large resident population, and its scale points to something built and rebuilt over a very long time.
Roman forces arrived in 137 BC under Decimus Junius Brutus. Their presence brought relative peace, and the population gradually moved down from the hilltops to the fertile lowlands along the Miño.
Heritage & Monuments
Tui's cathedral looks more like a castle than a church — its towers are battlemented and connected by walkways and passageways. It dominates the old town from the high ground above the river.
The Diocesan Museum and Historical Archive occupies a former hospital for the poor and for pilgrims, built in 1756. Three floors are arranged around a baroque courtyard, and the collection includes archaeological finds, medieval objects, sacred art, and goldsmith work from local, Spanish and American craftsmen.
The Convent of the Poor Clares was founded in 1524 on the site of an earlier Romanesque church. The present church dates from 1688 and was designed by master builder Santiago Domingo de Andrade. Beneath the convent, a vaulted tunnel connects the upper town to the area between the old walls — one of the more atmospheric corners of the city.
The Convent of Santo Domingo has a Gothic church typical of the early mendicant orders and served as the burial place of Tui's noble families.
Along the river, a waterfront path runs between the medieval walls and the Miño. The Jardines de Troncoso follow the line of the old fortifications, their shape still tracing the arrow-pointed bastion of the original walls.
Practical Travel Info
The nearest airports are Vigo (frequent flights from Madrid and daily from Barcelona, limited international routes beyond a seasonal London Stansted service), Santiago de Compostela (wide European connections), and Porto (European flights plus Newark NJ, Toronto, and Rio de Janeiro). Tui sits on the AP-9 motorway; no tolls or border checks apply. Bus.Gal runs roughly hourly from Vigo to Tui, taking 30 minutes.
Trains no longer stop at Tui station. Across the border, Valença has twice-daily trains from Porto Campanhã (2 hours 15 minutes via Nine and Viana do Castelo), continuing to Vigo Urzáiz. Pubs are concentrated in the streets around the cathedral.
