History of El Burgo de Osma

Long before El Burgo de Osma existed, the Arevaci Celtic-Iberian city of Uxama Argaela stood on the nearby hill known as Cerro Castro. Rome absorbed it in 99 BC, and the site remained occupied through the Roman period. Visible archaeological remains survive from both eras. After the Visigoths renamed it Oxoma, it gained an episcopal see in 597 AD. Muslim conquest followed — they called it Waxsima — and an Arab watchtower still stands on the Uxama hill.

Through the 10th-century frontier wars the town changed hands repeatedly. The Battle of Osma in 939, fought near here, saw the Christian forces of King Ramiro II of León and Count Fernán González decisively defeat Caliph Abd al-Rahman III. After the death of Almanzor in 1002 the area settled under Christian control for good, and the population gradually moved down from the castle hill to the flat ground beside the Río Ucero.

Bishop Pedro de Bourges — later Saint Peter of Osma — was appointed in 1101 and built the first Romanesque cathedral. Alfonso VIII later granted the growing settlement independent legal status as El Burgo de Osma. A subsequent bishop ordered the Romanesque structure demolished in the 1230s and replaced it with a Gothic cathedral, completed in 1361. The town walls still standing today were added by Bishop Pedro de Montoya, who also repaired the castle in 1460. For several centuries after that the Church effectively owned and governed the town, a stability that shielded it from wider Spanish political upheavals until the Mendizábal secularisation of 1836.

Heritage & Monuments

The entire town has been a protected Historic Site since 24 June 1993.

The Cathedral of Santa María de la Asunción is the centrepiece. Built in Gothic style after the earlier Romanesque cathedral was largely demolished in 1232, it retains the original chapter house and some wall sections. Inside, it holds a remarkable illuminated Beatus manuscript written by a cleric named Pedro and illustrated by Martino in 1086, which includes a world map reflecting the spiritual geography of the time. The cathedral was declared a monument of cultural interest on 3 June 1931.

The Hospicio is a major Neoclassical building commissioned by Carlos III at the request of Joaquín de Eleta and designed by Luis Bernasconi. It measures 84 metres long, 46 metres wide, and 11 metres high, with 365 windows.

The small Iglesia de San Antón sits near the seminary in the upper part of town, dating from the 16th century and reformed in the 18th. The historic centre also contains a number of aristocratic manor houses bearing stone coats of arms.

Across the river in the old settlement of Osma, the Iglesia de Santa Cristina preserves the relics of Saint Cristina and represents the Romanesque architecture of the Soria region. A Roman bridge over the Río Ucero stands alongside it. Above Osma, the Castillo de Osma occupies a hilltop on the left bank of the river; it was originally a triple-walled enclosure, though the two outer rings have largely disappeared. Several watchtowers are visible in the surrounding countryside. El Burgo de Osma also forms part of the Camino del Cid cultural route, specifically the section known as El Destierro.
