History of Agramunt
Agramunt was taken in 1070 by Ermengol IV of Urgell and granted a town charter in 1163. For over a century it served as capital of the County of Urgell, a status that brought real privileges — including the right to mint the county's own coins from 1200. The town changed hands repeatedly across the centuries: surrendering to Fernando I of Aragon in 1413, passing to Juan II of Aragon and then pledged to the Count of Pallás to settle debts, before returning to the Crown in 1472.
It was fought over again during the War of the Reapers, the War of the Spanish Succession, and the Peninsular War.
Heritage & Monuments
The church of Santa María is the main monument, and directly beneath it lies a Civil War air-raid shelter. The arcaded Porxada in the church square is worth a look. Elsewhere in town, the Espacio Guinovart occupies the old municipal market building and shows work by the artist Josep Guinovart.
Lo Pardal is a house of visual poetry dedicated to local artist Guillem Viladot. The park at the former convent holds a cistern and an ice well. The town also has a municipal ethnological museum and a park at Riella.
