History of Piornedo

Piornedo's name points to its landscape: it comes from *piorno*, a shrub once harvested alongside heather to make charcoal. The village sits in the parish of Donís, within the municipality of Cervantes in the comarca of Los Ancares, Lugo. Its origins are pre-Roman, and it was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1931, later catalogued as a cultural heritage asset.

Today it falls within the Los Ancares Lucenses biosphere reserve and belongs to the Ancares-Courel Geodestino. At the top of the village stands a small chapel dedicated to San Lorenzo.
