History of Carrión de los Condes

Archaeological finds, including Beaker-culture arrowheads, point to settlement here long before Roman times. The hilltop site, where the church of Nuestra Señora de Belén now stands, is thought to correspond to the Vaccaean city of Lacóbriga, later a stop on the Roman road between Astorga and Bordeaux — the same route that became the medieval pilgrim road from France.

The Codex Calixtinus describes Carrión as "rich in bread and wine," and the carvings of twenty-two craftsmen on the Romanesque church of Santiago reflect how busy the town was in the pilgrimage era. Multiple pilgrim hospitals were founded here, and the town hosted church councils in 1103 and 1130.

The "de los Condes" in the name is commonly attributed to the counts Gómez Díaz and Teresa Peláez, who funded the monastery of San Zoilo, the bridge over the Carrión river, and a pilgrim hospital. In fact, the full name does not appear in the record until 1522, and scholars trace it to a brotherhood formed by the Manrique and related noble families to keep the town within the royal domain. By 1894 the town had grown enough to be granted city status by the regent María Cristina.

Heritage & Monuments

Carrión is known above all for its Romanesque sculpture. The church of Santiago has an exceptional portal featuring a Pantocrator considered one of the great works of Romanesque carving. The church of Santa María del Camino carries a relief depicting the legend of the maidens saved from tribute to Moorish kings.

The monastery of San Zoilo, also a protected monument, contains a fine Plateresque cloister. All three — San Zoilo, Santa María, and Santiago — hold Cultural Interest Site (BIC) status, as do surviving sections of the town walls.
