History of Peratallada
The ground beneath Peratallada has been occupied for a very long time. The earliest traces are possibly Chalcolithic, and the Romans certainly settled here — a Greek oenochoe was found in 1976 at the estate known as Mas del Bou Negre, and later fieldwork turned up Roman common pottery and terra sigillata fragments in the same area. When the castle was restored in 1969, following its purchase by the counts of Torroella de Montgrí, workers uncovered ceramic and glass fragments from the medieval period mixed with Roman and even pre-Roman material. Further Roman pottery came to light in 1975 along a local track at the Mas, and those finds are now held at the former Museu Puig Castellar in Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
The first written records refer to a castle here, belonging to the Peratallada family lineage, around which the village gradually grew. Peratallada ceased to exist as a separate municipality in 1976, when it merged with Fonteta and Vulpellac to form the new municipality of Forallac.
