Heritage & Monuments

The highest point of Àger is occupied by the remains of the monumental complex of the Collegiate Church of Sant Pere, which includes the castle. The town grew up around this fortress, raised by Arnal Mir de Tost during the Reconquista on the ruins of an earlier Roman castle. The cloister of the collegiate — which once housed a community of canons — dates from the Romanesque period. From the Roman era, a gateway from the old Roman road survives, along with a sarcophagus now held in the church of Sant Vicenç. That same church also contains the Mare de Déu de Colobor, an image brought down from the sanctuary of the same name in the Montsec mountains.

In the surrounding area, several hermitages are worth seeking out. The hermitage of Santa Elena and that of the Mare de Déu de Pedra both survive from the Romanesque period; the latter preserves its original Romanesque temple alongside a later building. Across the wider municipality, other sites include the hermitage of the Mare de Déu de la Pertusa and the hermitage of the Santísima Trinidad in the village of Règola.

About 6 km from Àger, the tiny village of Fontdepou sits at 820 metres, with the Montsec to the north and the Noguera Pallarès and Noguera Ribagorçana rivers to either side. It has its own church dedicated to Sant Josep, a watchtower from a small Andalusian fortress that Arnal Mir de Tost took in 1042, and a stretch of Roman road that once connected Ilerda with local Roman settlements.
