History of Els Hostalets d'en Bas

Els Hostalets d'en Bas grew up in the 18th century around a roadside inn on the left bank of the upper River Fluvià, on the old royal road linking Olot and Vic. The wider plain, La Plana d'en Bas, had long been the heartland of the Viscounts of Bas. The street called Carrer Teixeda, lined with houses whose wooden balconies overflow with flowers, has been painted and photographed so often that the town was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument.

At the entrance to the village stands a monument to the local peasant farmers, sculpted by Modest Fluvià. In the rocky heights nearby, at the Rocs de Falgars, the single-nave, barrel-vaulted hermitage of Sant Miquel de Castelló was once the chapel of the old Castelló de Bas.
